RMD Calculator (Required Minimum Distribution)
Once you reach the RMD starting age, the IRS requires you to withdraw a minimum amount from tax-deferred retirement accounts each year. Enter your age and your prior December 31 balance to estimate the dollar RMD using the official Uniform Lifetime Table.
Your Details
RMDs apply at age 73 (75 from 2033); enter 72+ to see the table factor.
Your Estimated RMD
You generally must take this amount by December 31 (your first RMD can be delayed to April 1 of the following year). A 25% penalty (reduced to 10% if corrected timely) applies to the amount not withdrawn.
When RMDs begin (SECURE 2.0)
- Born before July 1, 1949: RMDs start at age 70½.
- Born July 1, 1949 – 1959: RMDs start at age 73.
- Born in 1960 or later: RMDs start at age 75 (from 2033).
- Roth IRAs have no RMD for the original owner; Roth 401(k)s do unless rolled into a Roth IRA.
Educational only — not tax advice. Figures use the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table (Pub. 590-B). Your plan may use a different table (e.g., the Joint and Last Survivor Table if your sole beneficiary is a spouse more than 10 years younger). Confirm with the IRS or your plan administrator.
